The job market in Japan operates on a highly unique, dual-document application system that is deeply rooted in its post-war economic history. During the era of mass new-graduate hiring and lifetime employment, companies evaluated candidates based on character and background rather than pre-existing skills, leading to the creation of standard profile sheets. It requires a formal, passport-style photograph, exact personal details including date of birth and address, a chronological timeline of education beginning from high school, and a brief, factual list of employment history without any elaboration on actual job duties. It also often requires a very brief statement of motivation, known as Shiboudouki (志望動機). Lies or exaggerations on the Rirekisho are strictly prohibited, as it is viewed as a legal reflection of reliability.
The second required document is the Shokumu-keirekisho (職務経歴書). This document functions as the equivalent of a detailed, Western-style CV and allows the candidate to showcase their specific expertise. Spanning between two and five pages, it acts as a "sales document" where the candidate can detail their professional experience, specific project responsibilities, technical skills, and quantifiable achievements. While the Rirekisho proves baseline reliability and conformity, the Shokumu-keirekisho is where mid-career candidates differentiate themselves based on merit, problem-solving capabilities, and the specific value they can deliver to the organization.
