Article 11: The German Lebenslauf: Formality, Documentation, and the Photographic Expectation

The German job market represents one of the most traditional, formal, and documentation-heavy recruitment environments in Europe. The German CV, known formally as the Lebenslauf, demands rigorous precision, factual accuracy, and specific structural elements that differ significantly from Anglo-American standards.

The structure of the Lebenslauf is typically contained within one to two pages, heavily focused on reverse-chronological data detailing education and professional experience. A critical distinction of the German system is the expectation of comprehensive attached documentation. Candidates frequently append a substantial dossier of translated educational certificates and official reference letters—known as Zeugnisse—directly to the application package to substantiate every claim made on the CV. Germany places extreme emphasis on formality and completeness.

Perhaps the most notable paradox within the German application process regards the inclusion of a photograph. Despite the stringent implementation of the GDPR across Europe, which strictly governs data privacy, the inclusion of a highly professional, studio-quality application photo at the top right of the Lebenslauf remains a deeply entrenched cultural expectation. While technically optional under modern anti-discrimination guidelines, omitting a photo in Germany is often viewed with suspicion, suggesting the application is incomplete or that the candidate lacks professional polish.

Conversely, German recruitment standards have modernized regarding other personal data. Candidates are no longer expected to provide information regarding their marital status, the number of children they have, their political affiliations, or their religious beliefs. Including such information is now considered unnecessary unless the applicant is applying to an institution directly affiliated with a specific religious organization.
